November 2011

Centre News

Our new website launches in early December. It will incorporate a simpler and more modern appearance, and will be easier for us to update regularly. The next EnviroNet will be sent out in early December to mark the launch.

We're also running a PHOTO COMPETITION. Email us any photos that you have taken or that you have the rights to use, and we'll put them in the pot from which some will be chosen to go on our new website. The photos should obviously have an environmental theme and be relevant to what we do - either locally or related to a globally important issue. Any successful entrants whose photo is published on the website will get a free Friends membership and Christmas gift.

Enviro News

Rena
The oil spill has been the main event of the past month, so most of our trustees and staff have spent some time helping with that in some way. Thank you for all your inquiries about the spill, and reports of oil sightings. We hope this will not happen again, of course, but it is great to know how much you all care about our local environment.

Some locals have set up a community website that tracks oil and debris sightings, as well as reports of any wildlife affected by the spill. See
www.renareport.org.

Not worried about greenhouse gas emissions?
Take a deep, calming breath and then read these 2 articles about last year's emissions:

Bird of the Year Election
Forest & Bird are running their annual Bird of the Year competition.
Vote for your favourite tweety-bird here. Polling closes on November 25th, the day before some other election...as my grandmother used to say, there are some funny birds standing for that one too.

Toilet Paper Buying Guide
Take a look at Greenpeace's guide to rainforest-friendly toilet paper before you stock up next shopping trip. (Unless you follow the lead of many developing countries and dispense with loo paper altogether!)
